international DAY OF THE GIRL 2025

The Girl I Am, the Change I Lead

Why We Celebrate International Day of the Girl

The International Day of the Girl is celebrated every year on October 11. This day was appointed by the United Nations General Assembly to formally recognize girls' fundamental rights and highlight the distinct, unique challenges girls face worldwide.

Girls are not just the future—they are powerful leaders and change-makers right now, driving positive growth around the globe. Every girl has the right to a safe, educated, and healthy life, both in their youth and as they transition into womanhood. When girls are properly supported and educated, their potential is limitless. An investment in realizing the full power of a girl doesn't just uphold her rights today; it promises a more equitable and prosperous future for everyone.

Join us as we work to support and empower every girl to reach her full potential!

Day of the Girl Campaign

D4G supports young girls on their academic journey by providing access to reusable sanitary pads. Lack of access to menstrual products in developing countries often excludes girls from school, community activities, and even their own families. Period stigmatization and shame can cause girls to fall behind in school, lead to depression, expose girls to sexual exploitation, or even suicide.

D4G addresses these menstrual barriers in three ways: giving access to high-quality, washable menstrual pads; establishing international sewing enterprises; and providing menstrual health education. Our Day of the Girl Campaign aims to raise funds to provide kits containing essential washable sanitary pads, underwear, and soap to school-aged girls in Kisii, Kenya. Read the impact access to washable pads had on one girl:

“I am among the girls sponsored in this organization of Grace Community Center-Kisii. I am so grateful and may the Almighty grant you serenity. You have supported me in my studies by providing my basic needs, like the resuable sanitary [pads] which help me feel confident during my periods. ... I am so happy to be in high school and studying ... I would like to be an Engineer in the future!"

Since 2015, Dignity4Girls has impacted the lives of over 10,000 women and girls by tackling period poverty.  Join us today in making a difference in the life of a school-aged girl in Kenya.

REMEMBERING Gayle

It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of our founder, Gayle Sommerfed. On September 24, 2025, Gayle went home to be with her Lord and Savior.

Gayle was a visionary who, motivated by the struggle of Kenyan girls missing school due to period poverty, founded Dignity4Girls in 2014. Inspired by her vision and leadership, D4G has helped over 10,000 girls and women gain access to life-changing menstrual solutions leading to better health, education, and brighter futures.
