For years, Robert Gutwa and his team in Kisii, Kenya, dreamed of using a large piece of donated property to serve their local community. Robert shared with D4G the elderly donor's dream of creating a special place for women and girls to come and be nurtured, mentored, and feel safe. Dignity4Girls saw a unique opportunity to work more directly to help women and girls address the many barriers they face.
In 2019, D4G funded a large building for gatherings, and Robert registered the property as the Grace Community Center, a community-based organization (CBO). Dignity4Girls has been blessed to partner with Robert and his team of 17 volunteers who consist of deaconesses, social workers and so much more. Together we have help the ministry reach hundreds of women and girls through special camps and programs. Enterprises have been established that provide washable pads, liquid soap, eggs and produce.
Robert always felt the dream would not be complete without a deep well (borehole) to provide clean water as the region is prone to drought. In 2022 the dream became a reality through D4G and a special donor. A solar-powered borehole with water filtration was added to the property. D4G knew the well would provide a safe collection station and would bless the many young girls whose job it had been to trek long distances to rivers to collect water. A task which kept them from school and risked putting them in harms way from male preditors.
The most recent addition to the center has been a large greenhouse that sits next to the property on leased farm land. This allows for drip irrigation from the borehole. It was advised to start by focusing on just one crop so seeds for 950 tomato plants were planted. The crop has been successful and the tomato harvesting has begun. The harvesting and selling of greenhouse produce will provide jobs for women and the local community will be blessed by their crops.
